why can police question us about the texts we sent each other? Do you find this valuable?

Hi, assuming that you have done nothing wrong or held in police custody, you are protected by s 21 New Zealand Bill of Rights Act against unreasonable search and seizure. You are only required to provide identification of yourself, such as your driver's licence and your name.
You also have a provilige against self-incrimination under s 60 of the Evidence Act and cannot be prosecuted or penalised for refusing or railing to provide information.
