Stealing at school and caught

I've had a stealing history before, but every time I send the stolen items back to the owner so i never really knew the seriousness of stealing. Recently I have been caught stealing other peoples wallets, phones and ipods at school. I understand this is very serious, and I want to change. The school is trying to get in touch with the Police -but the seem to be very busy. Would it be better for me to front up to everything at the local station or should i wait? The items have been returned to the owners including money, What will happen to be now? 1  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

The act of stealing is itself a criminal offence - regardless of whether the items stolen are returned to the owners - so it will be dealt with under section 219 of the Crimes Act 1961. The police may decide to prosecute, but this is unlikely given that you have returned the property and it's a relatively minor incident. Under the Bill of Rights you are entitled to the right to remain silent and you do not have to answer any questions the police ask you relating to the crime. Anything you tell them can be used against you in court. You have the right to a lawyer - you can ask for one and they have to provide you with one. This would be the best thing to do if the police want to prosecute.
Often schools will bring in the police to scare students. This is probably what is going to happen. If you want to make it all go away, you probably need to admit it was you, apologise and don't steal again! Because if you do, your track record will definitely see you end up in court and you'll have no chance in front of a jury.
