What is a bond? This is a featured page

A bond is money the landlord can ask you for and is a kind of “security”. If the house has been looked after and the rent paid then you will get it back when you leave. The landlord cannot ask you for a bond which amounts to more than four weeks rent and must give you a receipt for the money you pay him/her. The landlord must send the bond to the Bond Processing Centre through your local Tenancy Services office.

Alternatively, with the landlord’s consent you can send it to the Bond Processing Centre directly. If you do not get a copy of the Bond Payment form back from the Bond Processing Centre get in touch with your Bond Processing Centre office to check that the bond money has been sent to them.

For phone numbers of local offices of Tenancy Services see the end of this information sheet. You can also call Freephone 0800 83 62 62. The Bond Processing Centre will look after the bond money until you ask them to return it (i.e. when you leave the flat).
