What if I refuse to obey the uniform or appearance rules?
If you attend a Kura Kaupapa Maori, state or integrated school, the school can remind you of uniform rules and warn you to obey them or punish you by giving out a detention, extra duties and so forth. Remember that if you are refusing to obey the uniform or appearance rules because you can’t afford the correct uniform, then you should not be punished. If you are told a number of times to obey the uniform and appearance rules and you refuse (even when your family can afford the uniform) the school principal can stand you down or suspend you for continual disobedience which is a harmful example to other students. If you are stood down, you and your parents may ask for a meeting with the principal. If you are suspended, you and your parents must be invited to a meeting of the school Board of Trustees. At the meeting you can talk about whether the rule is lawful or fair and reasonable. For further information see our information sheet, Kicked out of school.
Teachers may confiscate non-uniform items that you wear to school. These should be returned at the end of the school day so you can take them home and not bring them back. You may be given a punishment such as detention for not wearing the correct uniform. Your school shouldn’t keep these items for weeks at a time, as they belong to you, or your family, rather than school. the newark bears game on 9 12 2010 was rained out after only 1 inning, and since it was the last game of the year they didnt want to refund our money all the fans had to storn the ticket window and demand a refund they waited 30 minutes,we still wouldnt leave finally they sent a kid over with vouchers for next year. and it was fan day also. how nice at first all they said was 'the game is cancelled leave' not go ask for a voucher..
