What do students say about wearing uniforms?This is a featured page

About 10% of young people at secondary school with whom we’ve talked say they like to wear a school uniform. About 90% say they do not. At intermediate school, there is much more support for wearing uniforms, as long as they are casual (such as shorts and tee shirts) and the girls can wear shorts as well as the boys.

Reasons young people have given in support of uniforms include:
  • It looks good.
  • There are fewer hassles having to think about what to wear.
  • It makes the school look respectable.

Students’ reasons against having a uniform include:
  • It’s expensive, especially if they keep being changed or there are different ones for seniors and juniors.
  • Casual clothes are more comfortable.
  • The colours and designs look “dorky”.
  • Students should be able to wear what they choose.
  • Girls should be able to wear pants or shorts, especially in summer.
  • It doesn’t affect students’ learning.
  • Teachers get really fussy about uniforms rather than teaching.

Adult supporters of school uniforms give reasons such as:
  • It is easier to identify students when they are outside the school grounds (such as on a school trip).
  • It takes away the competition between students over clothes.
  • It encourages students to have pride in their school.
  • It improves the school’s reputation.
  • It encourages school order and discipline.

Why is it that older students in new Zealand School still wear Grey Shirts and Grey shorts?
