What can I do if I don't want my birth parents to find me?This is a featured page

In the same way as your parents can stop you from finding out their names and addresses, if you were adopted before1 March 1986 you can write a letter (once you turn 19) to the Registrar-General saying that you would not like information about you being made available to your parents. You don't have to give any reasons for making this decision. If you would like some advice about your situation, the Registrar-General will put you in touch with a Counsellor.

If you change your mind later, that's OK too - you can write to the Registrar-General explaining that you've changed your mind. Your parents will then have access to your details.
Of course, even if you have informed the Registrar-General of you decision, your parents can still try and find you without 'official' help.
