Survival RightsThis is a featured page

These cover your basic right to life and ensure you have adequate shelter, nutrition, access to medical services and a decent standard of living. These are the basic rights you need to live.

For example the Convention says that every child has the right to an adequate standard of living and that if your parents cannot look after you properly - because they do not earn much money or are unemployed, then under Article 27 the Government must help your parents. This is why most families get “Family Support” from the Inland Revenue Department.

If a child or young person cannot live at home with their family the Convention says they must be looked after by another family or in a special children’s home. When a new home is being chosen for a child Article 20 says the child’s race, religion and culture and language must be considered.
