This information sheet is about the powers that schools have and students’ rights. It is to assist students on school councils and school boards of trustees, as well as anyone who is interested in how schools operate.

You spend a great deal of your time as a young person attending school. The law states that you must attend school or an equivalent learning arrangement between the ages of 6 and 16. When you are at school it is your responsibility to obey a number of school rules and you can be disciplined by the school if you don’t.
Schools therefore have the power to control your life to a certain degree during the time that you are required by law to attend. On the other hand you have rights when attending school that the school must observe. This information sheet attempts to provide you with an overview of the relationship between a school’s legal powers in its role as your education provider and your legal rights as a student.
