This information sheet answers questions on how students’ behaviour and relationships are managed at school. It talks about what your rights and responsibilities are and how your school can discipline you.

All the information below covers Kura Kaupapa Maori and state and integrated schools (an integrated school is a private school that has joined the state school system and gets funding from the government). Some of it covers private schools too.

What if I need more help?

The organisations below can help you decide what to do if you are worried about discipline at school. Most of them will be able to talk with you on the phone at first, but you or your family may need to write a letter after that. Check here for contact details.

Is it practice for a high school to stand down a student for being late to school too many times and disruptive in class? When I say late I mean 5min to 10min + or -

Is it legal for the deputy principal of a secondary school to force the whole school to line up in their class lines and stand still in silence for 10 minutes during interval because he believes that there is too much litter throughout the school?
