Requests for Original Birth Certificates and CounsellingThis is a featured page

If you were adopted before March 1986:

If there is no veto and you have requested your original birth certificate, the Registrar has to tell you in writing of the counselling services available. Unless you live overseas, you have to attend counselling before the original birth certificate is given to you. When you let the Registrar know who is counselling you, the original birth certificate will be sent to them and only given to you once counselling has been completed.

If you were adopted after March 1986:

If you request the Registrar to send you an original birth certificate the Registrar has to tell you in writing of the counsellors available. If you do want counselling, you must tell the Registrar in writing within 28 days. Your original birth certificate will then be sent to the counsellor and you can collect it. If you don't want counselling you can write and tell the Registrar who will then send the original birth certificate to you direct.
