Participation RightsThis is a featured page

These are exciting ones for children and young people. These rights give you the freedom to join associations and to participate in your society in preparation for adulthood. You are guaranteed the right to have a say in matters affecting your life. What sort of rights you have will depend on your age and understanding.
Adults in “public” life have to listen to what you think and take your views into account when they are making decisions about you.

For example Article 12 gives children the right to express views freely in matters which affect the child eg:

  • If your school wants to change your uniform, you could let them know what type of clothes you would like to wear; or
  • If you have been suspended the Convention says you have a right to be present at the meeting of the Board of Trustees when they decide what should be done.
