Parental Leave



  • You have the right to take time off for having or adopting a child. Pregnant employees can take up to 10 days off for pregnancy related reasons. Female employees are entitled to take a base amount of 14 weeks paid maternity leave and male employees are entitled to 2 weeks unpaid partner's leave. Parents who are eligible for parental leave can take a combined total of 52 weeks extended parental leave between them (minus any maternal or paternal leave they take.


  • To be eligible for parental leave you have to have worked at least an average of 10 hours each week for the same employer for 12 months before the expected date of the birth or adoption.

Sick Leave



  • All workers are entitled to 5 days a year paid sick leave after 6 months in a job if you, your partner or a dependant is sick or injured. Sick leave can be carried over to a maximum of 20 days.


  • An employer can require proof of a sickness or injury if you are sick or injured 3 or more days in a row.

Bereavement Leave



  • All workers are entitled to 3 days paid bereavement leave for the death of a close family member. Workers are entitled to 1 day paid bereavement leave if your employer accepts that you have suffered bereavement.
A close family member includes:


  • Spouse or partner;
  • Parent;
  • Child;
  • Brother or sister;
  • Grandparent;
  • Grandchild;
  • Spouse’s or partner’s parent,
