I am a foreign student. Do I have to pay school fees? This is a featured page

If you are a foreign student you do not automatically have a right to free education in New Zealand.

Schools can choose to provide you with free education for up to 20 days, but beyond that they have to charge you a fee unless the Ministry of Education says that you should be given free schooling.

Many schools charge about $8000 per year in fees for foreign students (this doesn’t include any boarding fees). This may include language support, assistance with settling into New Zealand and other support. Your family should ask exactly what is included before choosing a school for you.

If you need extra support once you are enrolled, you should ask your family or an adult supporter to talk with the principal or school board of trustees about this (see also “What if I need more help?” at the end of this information sheet). (For more information see our information sheet School Enrolment).
