How can I find out if I'm adopted?
Check your full birth certificate. A copy can be obtained from the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Private Bag, Lower Hutt, by giving your full names and date of birth and sending $26.00 for original documents. Sometimes it will have the words 'parents by adoption' noted against the names of your parents. But, for most adopted children, the birth certificate gives no indication whether you are adopted and until you turn 20, there is no easy way to find out. Once you turn 20, you can apply to the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages for a copy of your original birth certificate (which will have the name, address and occupation of your birth mother and possibly of your birth father). This costs $15.00. If you are not adopted, the Registrar-General will write to you and tell you this.
