Foster children have the same rights as all other children as well as extra rights given to them because they are being cared for by people who are not their parents or family members[1]. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCROC) requires the government to provide special protection and assistance to children who are temporarily or permanently deprived of (“without”) their family. The Children, Young Persons and their Families Act 1989 says that if you cannot live with your parents or family you have the right to live in a new family where you will be able to develop a sense of belonging and attachment but where your connection with your own family and culture will be maintained[2]. Your foster parents are expected to give you the affection, respect, nurturing and guidance that they would give to their own children. You should not be put at a disadvantage compared to other children just because you are in foster care., but along with your rights you also have responsibilities.
