Some schools have rules that say you must wear the school’s uniform. This is the case in more secondary schools than primary or intermediate ones and in more private or integrated schools than in state schools.

The law does not say that any school must have a uniform. Wearing uniforms at secondary school level has been the custom for many years in New Zealand.

It hasn’t been decided whether it is legal or illegal for state schools to make students wear a uniform. Unless it is decided that it is illegal, you will have to wear the uniform if your school rules say so. If there were to be a court case about whether students can be made to wear uniforms, it is likely the judge would decide that you had to. However, there are some situations where you don’t need to wear the uniform or you can wear it differently from other students.
