Consumer Guarantees ActThis is a featured page

If you buy a good or service for your personal or household use (eg. a CD or haircut), from a person or business who, in trade, sells those things to the public, you’re protected by the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. This Act sets out things that the seller must guarantee about the good or service you are buying. The goods can be second-hand, given to you as a gift, on HP, lease, hire or exchange [4].

These guarantees include that:
  • The good is of ‘acceptable quality’ – acceptable in appearance and finish, free from minor defects or faults, durable, safe to use and suitable for all the purposes goods of that kind are usually used for [5].
  • The good is ‘fit’ (suitable) for the purpose that it was bought for (as long as you’ve let the seller know that’s what you want it for (if it’s not the usual purpose) or the seller has told you it can be used for that) [6].
  • The service will be carried out with reasonable care and skill and will be fit for the purpose you got it for (as long as you’ve let the seller know that’s what you want the service for, or the seller has told you it will do that) [7].
