Can unpaid school fees be passed to debt collectors? This is a featured page

Again, this depends if the “fee” is really a fee or just a donation. It is important to write to a debt collection company straight away and tell them if you or your caregivers do not agree with a debt. Debts harm your credit rating, and in the future, banks or hire purchase companies may not lend you money or let you buy things on hire purchase. If you have already explained that you believe the debt is wrong, the bank (or hire purchase company) should think about that when deciding whether to give you a loan. If the debt is in your name, it is helpful to tell the debt collection company your age.

Your school should be careful not to pass unpaid donations to debt collectors, as they are not debts. If your school does do this, your caregivers (or you, if the debt is in your name) may have a legal action against the school for the damage to their credit rating and any other problems caused by the debt collectors trying to get the “debt” paid off.
