Can I wear a piercing at school? This is a featured page

Most school principals and Boards of Trustees consider body piercing to be jewellery and pass rules that put limits on wearing jewellery. These limits may say that only ear studs or sleepers are allowed. Some school rules won’t allow more than one ear piercing in each ear; some allow more. Very few schools allow students to wear nose or eyebrow piercings, for example. You could still have these parts of your body pierced, but probably couldn’t wear the jewellery during school time if the rules prevent it. However, as with dreaded hair, you could argue that the school rules shouldn’t put this limit on your right to express yourself. This right is in the Bill of Rights and the Children’s Convention. It is up to the School Board of a state or integrated school to show that the rule limiting your freedom of expression is “reasonable” and “justified”.

For more information, “What does the law say about uniform and appearance rules?”.

Because of the Bill of Rights and the Human Rights Act, you would have a stronger case for keeping a nose piercing, for example, in if it was for religious or cultural reasons.

If you have a part of your body pierced, which is not visible, you should be able to wear jewellery in that piercing without breaching school rules, as school uniform rules are mainly about appearance. The exception would be a piercing that could be unsafe during contact sport. This may apply to a navel piercing, for example.

Some school principals believe navel piercings shouldn’t be allowed even when they aren’t visible. They say this is for health reasons and that navel piercings can get infected easily. This can happen, although, this is unlikely if the piercing is done in a sterile place, by a trained person.

If you are having a disagreement with your school about an issue like this, remember to check out exactly what the school rules say. The rules must clearly prohibit (not allow) your way of dressing.

i sort of disagree with schools that won't allow any piercings, or very little. i understand if they are kind of out there, but having your nose pierced isn't hurting anyone. i am currently fifteen and i have my nose pierced and 8 piercings on my ears. i am a straight A student that is in all advanced classes. what's wrong with having piercings??? Oh, and i am in my schools JROTC program :)
