Can I refuse medical or dental treatment? This is a featured page

If you are 16 or older you can always consent to or refuse any medical or dental treatment .You have a legal right to consent to an abortion at any age. Under that age you can consent to or refuse medical treatment if you are old enough and mature enough to weigh the risks and benefits of the proposed treatment and make a balanced judgment.[66] Most doctors will not provide major treatment to under 16 year olds unless consent is given by a parent or legal guardian.[67]If you are under a guardianship order your social worker will be able to give the consent on behalf of Child, Youth and Family. If you are under a custody order a parent or legal guardian may have to give consent.

In most cases you will make decisions about any major health or dental treatment after talking the issue through with the doctor, your caregivers and your social worker. If some important health decisions have to be made you can ask your social worker to attend the appointment with the doctor.
