Can I get help to pay for my transport to and from school? This is a featured page

Usually your family is expected to pay for the cost of getting you to school. However there can be school transport assistance for some students who go to state or integrated schools. This is usually because you live in the country a long way from a school, or because you are attending a Kura Kaupapa Maori or a bilingual school that is not nearby, or because you have to attend a special school or a special unit in a mainstream school.

The money comes from the Ministry of Education (MOE), although sometimes your school board will decide the details of how it’s to be spent. It can go towards school buses, private cars, public transport or taxis for students with special needs.

There are quite a few rules that are used to decide if you will get school transport assistance. You or your caregivers should call your local office of the MOE to see if there is money available for you.

If your caregivers cannot afford the cost of your travel to and from school, they can also apply to Work and Income New Zealand for a “Special Benefit” for transport costs. This is because you must go to school, so your caregivers cannot easily avoid the cost.
