Can I get help to pay for my school uniform?
If your caregivers are getting a benefit through Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) or on a low income they may be able to get WINZ to help pay for your school uniform. You may be able to get help yourself if you are on an Independent Youth Benefit. There is a telephone number for WINZ under “What if I need more help?” at the end of this information sheet.
The benefit to ask for is called a Special Needs Grant or SNG. Usually the money given by WINZ has to be paid back, and you must get a written quotation from the shop first and take this to an interview with a WINZ caseworker.
This help is like an interest free loan. Your caregivers will pay WINZ back through their usual benefit or wage packet over a period of time. WINZ can take from $5 - $15 per week. WINZ decides how much they will take depending on how much your caregivers were given and whether your caregivers already have any debts with WINZ.
If there are special circumstances, for example your house has burnt down, your caregivers should tell WINZ. WINZ will think about this when they are deciding whether or not to give your caregivers help to pay for your school uniform.
If you have to change schools unexpectedly, (for example, because you get suspended from school), your caregiver can apply to WINZ for a “non-recoverable Special Needs Grant”. This is an emergency payment that does not have to be paid back. You will need a letter from your school’s uniform shop for WINZ that says how much the uniform will cost before WINZ will pay the money.
If WINZ decides not to give your caregivers money to help pay for your school uniform your caregivers can ask the reason why. They have the right to appeal to WINZ to ask that the decision be reviewed.
