welfare & benefits

New Zealand has a social welfare system to make sure that people who can’t afford necessary things like food and accommodation can still look after themselves. If you can’t earn enough money to cover these basic costs, you might be able to get money from the government to help you. Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) is the government organisation that deals with benefits. You can find a full list of all the benefits that are available on the WINZ website.

It is great that we have a system to help people who need it. But sometimes the system might not be working very well for you. You might think that WINZ isn’t giving you what you should be getting. Or WINZ might accuse you of doing something you shouldn’t, and stop giving you your benefit. They could even ask you to pay them back a whole lot of money, or maybe even try to take you to court. If these things happen, it is important to know that WINZ cannot just do whatever they want. There are laws and rules that they have to follow as well.

If you think that WINZ might not be treating you fairly, a lawyer might be able to help you. Call YouthLaw or your local Community Law Centre.
