Hi it's Gyro here again . I would like to say about youth in general and the rise in problems concerning youth in the community. Over the past twelve years I have worked with troubled youth but currently working in a mall as a custodian which security is a major part of my job. In and around the mall we have all sorts of problems relating to youth and I have noticed the attitude Adults are having toward the youth is getting worse. However as well as working in this setting I have worked in many schools and situations with youth in the community. I have found throughout the years even with many of the challenging youth listening to them and showing them respect are the two components which usually do the trick. At home go away & at school often their rights are violated eg If one or two play up the whole class stays in or they may get unlawfully suspended and so on, then with nothing to do they may hang out at a shopping centre. don't loiter , go away , don't do this don't do that and if they get into trouble with the Police in many situations a Parent won't even turn up to be at the interview and this is also happening in schools as well. The other night after I closed the mall I had three teenagers at the door who I recognised. They had been beaten up in a brawl with drunk adults attacking the youth after one of the youth made a comment. They told me they came to me because I was the only one they felt they could come to which they knew would help them. I felt really privileged that youth could approach a security person and say that. I checked the kids for any serious injury and showed them compassion and talked to them then took them home. The next day many of the youth connected with these three youth greeted me and called me by my first name.. Wake up adults and try to see things a little from their perspective. I love working with youth but unfortunately due to Government cuts I am out of it for now.

MY daughter (Yr 13) has been blocked from internet access (along with 69 other pupils and 1 teacher) for the rest of this term. Apparently they used a proxy server to access websites. The school cannot tell me what sites were accessed only that my daughter used the proxy server. This was not discussed with her and a blanket ban was put in place. Four of her subjects require frequent internet access for research and she is prevented from working with the rest of her class, so is falling behind with her work. Some students are luckier as they do not need as much access. I understand she has done womething wrong, but feel the punishment is detrimental to her achieving NCEA. There was no discussion about the situation. I received a letter in mail telling me about the blocked access. When I asked for advice on how to help her keep up with the work I was told it was not the school's problem. I was also told if my daughter was doing 5 subjects, instead of 4, it wouldn't have been as much as a problem regarding credits. I feel the school also had a responsibility to ensure the access to the proxy server was not there. I would rather she had 10 detentions than have a punishment that can effectively means she cannot participate in class instead of playing Oregon Trail as the others work. One of her teachers has already complained to the deputy principal, but to no avail. Your thoughts

We have agreed that the above custody order under section 101[1]e be made in our favour but I am not exactly sure what it is - I know I can ring CYFS to find out and speak to social worker but haven't got that much time to hang on the phone.
