As an Aspergers Adult who has worked in the mainstream school area with Aspergers children for twelve years , I have found many misconceptions even through professionals which result in stigma and often unfair treatment of Aspergers children. At one school in West Auckland I identified a child as possibly having Aspergers and the reply I got from the Teacher was that it had been considered but we decided against it because he's not violent. People have many misconceptions which become beliefs and an attitude is a belief in action. I would like to put people straight on some of these issues and I am interested in reading about other peoples perspectives and experiences. Aspergers children are regular stigmatised and punished as a result. I will also offer my own experiences and why it is necessary for peoples perspectives to change. Please share your perspectives

Hi Rod, It's been awhile since we spoke. Funny places we can bump into each other. You are so right re this area of special needs & the myths that continue in the school & health settings. I am horrified (regularly) at the attitudes of the medical specialists within the public health system that families without money trees must use. The children are suffering as a result...misdiagnoses or partial diagnoses continue and these people are so "one-eyed" they refuse to listen/consider any other information re potential conditions. What up-skilling are they required to do??? Or do they even choose to do any??? it seems not. !!! Our current govt seems even less interested than the last one in this area of special needs. I keep wondering how much worse things can get...and then John Key & his team come up with new levels to sink to...bullies is a description that comes to my mind. We need to band together to facilitate change & let them know it is NOT ok to continue to remove funding from Special Needs. And furthermore, they need to provide appropriate levels of funding for the moderate needs group of children as well. The current situation is reprehensible IMHO. Hope you're making small measures of progress at least. Cheers,

A laborer is worthy of his pay!!!!! I think it is absolutely disgusting that a government department would take you on to help these children and then send you on you way with nothing to show for it. You are victim to what's called 'SLAVE LABOR' If this is what our government is doing then I am embarrassed to be a kiwi!
