To preserve their independence, Community Law Centres were not traditonally funded by the taxpayer. CLCs were formerly funded through the Special Fund, a fund administered by Government but generated through interest paid on solicitors’ trust accounts. So historically other lawyers funded CLCs.
However, following significant changes in 2011, CLCs now bid for government contracts from the Ministry of Justice, who in turn now retain the interest from solicitors’ trust accounts. The value of YouthLaw’s annual contract is in the region of $550,000. This is obviously a very limited sum when it comes to providing a national phone service staffed by fully qualified solicitors. We gratefully receive any donations made.
